Trivia about the Lands Management Bureau (Bureau of Lands)

Lands Management Bureau (Bureau of Lands)

The Lands Management Bureau (LMB) traces its roots in September 2, 1901 when the “Insular Bureau of Public Lands” was created by virtue of Act 218, empowering it to administer and dispose lands of the public domain.

In 1906, the insular Bureau of Public Lands was renamed “Bureau of Lands” by virtue of Act 1407.

In 1916, the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) was organized and the Bureau of Lands was placed under its portfolio.

While the Bureau was in the midst of decentralization activities, Presidential Decree No.461 was issued on May 17,1974, splitting the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources into two separate Ministries and this time the Bureau of Lands was placed under the Ministry of Natural Resources.

In 1987, then President Corazon C. Aquino issued Executive Order No. 192 reorganizing the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Under the said order, the Bureau of Lands was renamed into Lands Management Bureau and absorbed the powers and functions of the Bureau of Lands except those line function and powers which were transferred to the Regional Offices (Section 14, E.O. No. 192 dated June 10, 1987).
