Trivia about the lnternational Year of Volunteers (lYV)

Year 2001 is designated international Year of Volunteers (lYV). This posts an outstanding milestone in the history of volunteerism and underscores its continuing relevance in the fast globalizing and technology-driven world of the 21st century.

The international Year of Volunteers was declared by the United Nations General Assembly during its 52nd session on November 17, 1g97 in recognition of the growing importance of volunteerism in addressing diverse human needs and building a better world for all. IYV was supported by 123 countries and a host of non-government organizations and the civil society.

IYV promotes four objectives: increased recognition, facilitation, promotion and networking of volunteer contributions worldwide. Riding on the theme “bonding globally, building locally”, lW was launched at the UN headquarters in New York City on December b, 2000. The event stirred waves of conceded voluntary efforts worldwide and created an environment of stronger cooperation and networking among the volunteers and supporters of volunteerism. Communication channels, particularly the mass media and the internet, continuously report events and activities carried out by participating countries. These include holding of conferences and fora on volunteerism, tree plantings, beach clean-ups, intensive information and advocacy campaigns and many others.

Stamps and Official First Day Cover will be available starting 24 October 20O1 at the Philatelic Division, Door 203, Liwasang Bonifacio, 1000 Manila and all Regional Offices of the Philippine Postal Corporation.
