Trivia about the Native Orchids


Liparis latifolia

The pseudobulbs of Lrparis latifolia are very close together, somewhat flattened, and up to 9 cm long. The leaves are leathery, acute, about 24 cm long and 5 cm wide The inflorescence is terminal, upright, slightly longer than the leaves, many flowered. The flowers are small in size, brick red, some with a greenish tint, sepals and petals pointing downward. The lip is recurved through ‘1 80″, with a darker color, bilobed; its margin is erose. The pollinarium has four pollinia.

Spathoglottis plicata

Spathoglottis plicata is a terrestrial orchid. The pseudobulbs are up to 7 cm long,and 5 cm wide. The leaves have length wisef olds (plicate),andare30to 120 cm long, and 3 to 9 cm wide; the petiole is 10 to 15 cm long, The infloresence is erect, up tp 75 cm tall. The flowers do not all open at the same time. The flowers are white, pale pink, rose to dark purple, 3 to 5 cm in diameter. The sepals are widely stretched out, up to about 25 mm long and 9 to 13 mm wide The petals are similar but slightly broader than the sepals. The lip is trilobed, having a callus between the side-tbbes. Ttre pollinarium”has eight pollinia in two groups.

Cymbidium finlaysonianum

Cymbidium finlaysonianum is a very large plant, growing in big clumps. The pseudobulbs are about 7 cm long and hidden by the (about) five leaves they bear’ The stiff, fleshy leaves can grow up to 80 cm long and 4 cm wide. The pendent, loosely many-flowered iiflorescence can reach more than 1 20 cm in length The fleshy flowers are up to 6 cm across. The fleshy three-lobed lip bears two thick keels on its mid-lobe; the lateral lobes are large. The pollinarium consists of two slit pollinia with stipes.

Phalaenopsis schilleriana

Phalaenopsis schilleriana has beautiful silverish grey mottled leaves which are slightly purple below and up to 40 cm long. The inflorescence is manyflowered, erect to bent, often branched, and up to 1 m long. The flowers, which reich’80 mm in diameter, are purple of varying intensity. The lip is threelobed with a callus between the lateral lobes, with anchor-like appendages in the apical part of the front-lobe. The pottinarium najtwo cleftpollinia connected to a stipe with a large viscidium.
