The University of Santo Tomas gratefully looks back to July 24,1605, when Bishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of Manila bequeathed a modest amount from his personal funds and his personal library collection for use in the establishment of a ‘seminary-college’ to prepare young men for the priesthood.

Trivia about the “Stand Up Against Poverty” campaign of the United Nations

A million Filipinos and more to STAND UP against poverty……

For one whole day, from 6 p.m. of October 15 until 6 p.m., October 16, 2006, over one million Filipinos from different sectors of society will join millions of others worldwide in an ultimate pledge of commitment to make poverty history by 2015. Within a 24-hour period, people from all over the world will physically and symbolically stand up to communicate their desire to fight poverty. This is also expected to set an official Guinness World Record. The event is part of the UN Month celebration in 2006.

 

Trivia about the Filipino Legacy in Hawaii

It was in December 20, 1906 that the ship Doric docked at Honolulu, carrying fifteen Filipinos (one of whom brought along his fighting cock) along with a handful of Chinese, Japanese and Sikhs. Eleven of the Filipinos were single, four were married.

Trivia about Miguel Lopez de Legazpi

Born in Zumarraga, Guipuzcoa, Spain around 500 years ago, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi went to Mexico in 1545 where he became clerk of the Cabildo or municipal government. He was appointed in 1561 to lead an expedition to discover the islands of the West called Islas Poniente. He formally colonized the Marianas and the Philippines in 1565 and established a settlement in Cebu, which was first name as the Villa del Santisimo Nombre de Jesus. He founded the city of Manila in 1571.

Trivia about Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s Roots in Fujian, China

On January 23, 2003, a Philippine delegation led by Philippine Congress Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr. and Congressman Roque Ablan, Jr. descendants of the Rizal clan, officials of the Knights of Rizal and members of the Filipino & Chinese business community held the wreath-laying ceremony before the Rizal Monument in the Rizal Park in Siongque Village (called “Zhang-Guo” in Mandarin Chinese), Jinjiang City, Fujian Province, People’s Republic of China.

Trivia about the Mallat Drawings

After briefly passing by the Philippines on an observation trip which took him to China in 1838, the French traveler Jean Mallat, took a serious interest in the Philippines. Mallat later returned two times and traveled more extensively. He compiled notes about his travels in the archipelago which were published in a book entitled Les Philippines.
